A Splattering Of Horror (Mostly TIFF) Movies

houseatendofstreet

We are entering the hot season for horror movies, with THE POSSESSION lording over the box office the past two weeks, RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION out yesterday, and a slew of others on the horizon. It is the slew on the horizon that I’m going to focus on in this post as I round up all of the images, posters, trailers, and clips that you may have missed over the past week.

First up is…

SINISTER

The newest horror film in the burgeoning Blumhouse Productions umbrella (PARANORMAL ACTIVITY) comes from writer-director Scott Derrickson (THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE) and stars Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio. In the film, Hawke finds a mysterious box of home movies, and bad things happen. Similar to THE POSSESSION, minus the Dybbuk.

We have a couple new tidbits, first being the cool new poster for the film, seen above (STYD), and the slightly sad news that the film has been delayed. But fret not! It’s only been delayed a week, from October 5th, to October 12th. Finally, we also have the first TV spot from the film (entitled “See Him”), which opens with the immortal words: “I have a good feeling about this house…” Have these people never seen a horror movie before?

AFTERSHOCK

This week, AFTERSHOCK debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film is written by Nicolas Lopez (and Eli Roth) and directed by the Chilean filmmaker (who is set to produce Roth’s THE GREEN INFERNO). Eli Roth stars in the film (along with Selena Gomez), which follows an American tourist who travels to Chile, meets some ladies (score), then suffers through an earthquake (darn) that starts the vacation from hell (damn). So, same set up as HOSTEL, but with natural disasters. We have the first clip from the film, embedded below.

Right now we don’t have a release date for the movie, but with TIFF in full force, I’d expect some news on that front shortly.

THE BAY

You’ve probably seen a bunch of Barry Levinson movies. The guy started his career with a bang, with DINER, THE NATURAL, GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM, and RAIN MAN, adding SPHERE, WAG THE DOG, and BANDITS to the resume. Now, he’s finally delving into horror, with a found footage film called THE BAY.

Another film debuting at TIFF (it was a Midnight Madness flick!), the movie, from the producers of INSIDIOUS and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY as the poster succinctly states, stars the gorgeous Kristen Connolly (CABIN IN THE WOODS) and is set in Chesapeake Bay, where there’s something in the water. And no, it’s not some big shark thing. It’s a lot of toxicity, and despite warnings, the town’s water supply is not cut off, and soon, a horrible plague is unleashed on the poor town. Levinson has a ton of talent, and while his excellence has waned somewhat recently (though some may say I DON’T KNOW JACK), I still think this movie bears monitoring closely. We have the first trailer for you embedded below.

You can expect to see the film in theaters November 2nd.

Continue on for V/H/S, THE LORDS OF SALEM, HOUSE AT THE END OF THE STREET, CITADEL, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4, TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D, BYZANTIUM, ANTIVIRAL, MAMA, & SCARY MOVIE 5!
