Valiant Comic Previews: RAI, DOCTOR MIRAGE, X-O MANOWAR

Considering how much of a bad rap the early 90s get in comic fandom these days, it’s surprising that the relaunch of the Valiant Universe has been so completely successful, boasting huge writers, fantastic artists, and a steadily growing lineup of quality titles. (Five-second comics history lesson: Valiant first appeared in 1989, and within five years had introduced a lineup of characters that began to rival Marvel and DC in their popularity—a first for the industry.) I always get excited about new Valiant series, and here we have previews of two fairly recent additions, RAI and THE DEATH-DEFYING DOCTOR MIRAGE, as well as a new installment of Valiant’s flagship title that has been consistently amazing since Issue #1: X-O MANOWAR.

RAI #4

From the press release: “In 4001 A.D., as the nation of Japan soars above the Earth, Rai unravels the mystery of the first murder in a thousand years… and discovers his own profound connection to the crime. Everything Rai knows—about his existence, about his country, and about the benevolent Father he serves—is about to be thrown out of orbit.” So, in case you haven’t been reading RAI… wait a minute. Why the hell haven’t you been reading RAI? Get on that right now! Matt Kindt has taken the word “scope” and applied it to futuristic Sci-Fi in classic Asimov style, and the ubertalented Clayton Crain makes it all so very pretty to look at. Incredible series. On sale August 27.

THE DEATH-DEFYING DOCTOR MIRAGE #2

From the press release: “Leaving her mortal body in deadly danger, the spirit of Dr. Mirage is about to enter the afterlife’s web of worlds, and begin the fight to win back the husband she thought she’d lost forever. But enemies lie in wait everywhere, and while demons and beasts besiege Mirage in the spirit world, an unexpected new eruption of evil will threaten her life on Earth.” After a decidedly thoughtful and melancholy opening issue (out September 3—don’t miss it!), it’s time for DOCTOR MIRAGE to get down to business. Jen Van Meter and Roberto de la Torre are giving Valiant an unusual taste of the supernatural. The only other Valiant book that’s done that is SHADOWMAN. Bring it on. On Sale October 8th.

X-O MANOWAR #28

From the press release: “In the far reaches of deep space, an elite and hardened corps of soldiers has protected the galaxy by eliminating one unparalleled threat—a plague of X-O Manowar armors that has driven the universe to the brink of madness.” X-O Manowar armor is basically an alien entity that gives its host ridiculously awesome powers and a lightning sword. What’s not to love? Robert Venditti has been on this book from the beginning and it just keeps getting better. I miss original artist Cary Nord, but Diego Barnard seems fully capable of rendering deep space and crazy aliens. On sale August 27.
