Favorite Five: Movie Aliens

Aliens have delighted us, scared the living crap out of us, come to be our friends, or come to assimilate our race. Aliens come in different sizes, shapes, colors, and spaceships. Aliens have profoundly shaped cinema as a whole, and practically every great science fiction movie features one of them. Aliens are so alien, so different and startling, but they never fail to capture our imagination, or our fears. Whether we like them because they’re like us and teach us about the human condition, or because they are so unlike us, they rarely cease to be compelling “others.”

There are SO MANY awesome aliens in films, and this could easily be a list of 100 (I’d probably still miss something fantastic). Limiting it to five was nigh impossible, but also part of the fun.

5. Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy, STAR TREK)

Leonard Nimoy is the man. People use that phrase a lot, but Leonard Nimoy may come the closest to actually achieving whatever the hell that statement means. His performance as Mr. Spock is beyond indelible, turning Captain Kirk’s second in command into one of the greatest characters of all time. The only reason he’s relatively low on this list is because this is entirely MOVIE aliens. So we’re only talking six original series movies and his awesome role in J.J. Abrams’ reboot films.

There’s not much to be said about Mr. Spock that hasn’t been said already a thousand times over, interspersing commentary with clever usages of his catchphrases. But that right there is why Mr. Spock cements his spot on this list. While some characters are lucky to have one catch phrase, buzz word, or memorable line, Mr. Spock has THREE: ”live long and prosper“, “fascinating“, and “logical.” He also has those ears, those eyebrows, two universally acknowledged and beloved physical traits. It doesn’t get any more classic than Mr. Spock. So logically, he’s only #5 on my list, but it’s fair if your reaction is similar to Nimoy’s himself:
