Who is excited for and who is lamenting the remakes of CARRIE and EVIL DEAD? Bruce Campbell has already boldly claimed that the EVIL DEAD remake will be just as memorable as Sam Raimi’s original, and Kimberly Peirce has said that her version of CARRIE will be completely disconnected from Brian De Palma’s original.
Here’s what Ms. Pierce said about CARRIE and Chloë Grace Moretz’s performance on her Facebook page:
… I have gone back to the wonderful Stephen King Book CARRIE; I am also modernizing the story as one has to in order to bring any great piece of work written in one era into the next and especially given how very relevant this material is right now. Chloe is going deep into character to get this right….sewing her own dresses, spending time in her closet….and so much more….
Attendees of New York Comic Con will get to see exclusive first looks at both upcoming films CARRIE and EVIL DEAD as Sony Pictures debuts them on Saturday, October 13th, at the Javits Center.
Here’s the official word:
The panel presentations for CARRIE and EVIL DEAD will take place between 3:45pm-4:45pm on October 13th. The CARRIE panel will include the film’s stars, Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore, along with producer Kevin Misher and director Kimberly Peirce. Evil Dead’s panel will include the film’s star, Jane Levy (“SUBURGATORY”), producer (and star of original) Bruce Campbell and director, Fede Alvarez.
CARRIE is a reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloe Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom. Based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King and directed by Kimberly Peirce with a screenplay by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The film will be released nationwide on March 15, 2013.
In the remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, EVIL DEAD finds five twenty-something friends holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival. Directed by Fede Alvarez, with a screenplay by Alvarez & Rodo Sayagues Mendez, the film will be released nationwide on April 12, 2013.
New York Comic Con is taking place from October 11th-14th at the Javits Center (655 West 34th Street, New York). More information can be found at NewYorkComicCon.com.
I’ve never read Stephen King’s novel, but Sandy Schaefer over at ScreenRant.com pointed out that it’s an epistolary novel “composed of old-fashioned documents like newspaper articles and letters” and rightly observed that “for an age where social networking and v-logging is all the rage, especially among high schoolers,” the best course of action for a movie that wants to compete with Brian De Palma’s classic would be to go back to the original source. What do you think?
