Winter is coming… and it’s going to be a longer winter than normal! This is hardly surprising, but welcome news, considering the third season will be adapted from the first half of George R. R. Martin’s biggest tome of the SONG OF ICE AND FIRE series to date, A STORM OF SWORDS (clocking in at 973 pages).
While we won’t be getting more than the normal 10 episodes (lame), we will be getting a bit more of Westeros every week.
Co-creator and showrunner D.B. Weiss: “There’s almost another full episode’s worth of extra minutes spread across the season…One of the great liberties with HBO is we’re not forced to come in at a specific time. We can’t be under 50 minutes or over 60, but that gives us a lot of flexibility.“
David Benioff: “A super-sized season, as befitting Storm of Swords…Last year we had a lot of 52-minute episodes. This year is a lot of 56, 57.“ The finale is also expected to be longer than an hour. We can always hope for 2!
GAME OF THRONES returns to HBO and our cold, dead hearts on March 31st, 2013.
