“Independence Day 2″ Could Move Forward Without Will Smith

Chalk up this one to the bad idea department, but it’s apparently happening regardless. Bill Pullman, who makes most of his money playing Presidents (he’s on NBC’s oval office comedy 1600 PENN as the Prez), got to talking about the progress of INDEPENDENCE DAY 2, in which he would reprise his role as President Thomas Whitmore.

Here are his words, discussing whether or not Will Smith will be involved and if that even matters:

“The Will Smith part of it may be ongoing…but I think there’s strategies for both. I like what I have to do in both of them. I’m not in an old age home in a wheelchair being wheeled out for one more moment. It’s a very interesting conception of what happens to Whitmore between then and when it picks back up…Nobody’s holding their breath…because it’s been continually plagued.”

Even so, he mentions that production could begin within the year. Fast movement for a project that had been languishing for more than a decade.
