On December 18th, the Swann Auction Galleries will be running a sale on cool retro film posters from the reels of days gone by. That event is entitled Monsters & Maidens: A Film Poster Collection, and features approximately 150 posters with the same theme: a damsel in distress in the arms of the film’s villain. To pique your interest, we have several of the posters that will be on sale in the gallery below!
Highlights include H.R. Hopps’ DESTROY THIS MAD BRUTE (save your pennies; it’s estimated in the 12-18k range), Giorgio Olivetti’s KING KONG ($6,000-9,000), EL VAMPIRO ($800-1200), Reynold Brown’s CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON ($15,000-20,000), and oh so many more.
The event will be held in New York City at Swann’s HQ, at 104 East 25th Street. If you can’t be there in person, you can make bids by the phone (212-254-4710), by fax, mail or e-mail or through their website, and Swann’s staff will bid FOR you!
In conjunction with the sale, Swann Galleries is running a contest, where fans can submit their own photos reenacting a famous monster and maiden pose, or put their own twist on it. The winner will receive a campy horror movie poster, and will be decided by celebrity judge 30 ROCK star Judah Friedlander. Submissions must be e-mailed by Thursday December 13th to monstercontest@swanngalleries.com. Winners will be announced next Monday December 17th. You can tweet your photo and see other submissions at #monstersandmaidens. Go here for more information.
