In case you haven’t been following the news, A&E has been in the process of making BATES MOTEL, a prequel TV series based on Hitchcock’s PSYCHO, with Carlton Cuse (LOST) on hand as the executive producer.
Up until now, Vera Farmiga (UP IN THE AIR, SOURCE CODE) had been the only casting news, as Norma Louise Bates, the mother who will shape young Norman Bates into one of the most well known serial killers ever. Now, the search for Norman Bates has ended, and the choice is Freddie Highmore (above). Highmore is a British chap, well known for his roles in FINDING NEVERLAND and CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. It’s insane to fathom, but Highmore is already 20 years old. He looks about 9.
It was previously mentioned that Cuse’s “Norman might not be what fans expect. Cuse isn’t looking for someone to imitate Perkins, as this series will offer an original, multi-layered take on Hitchcock’s classic.” Furthermore, Cuse describes Farmiga’s Norma as “very hot.”
The show is aiming for a 2013 premiere, and plans to shoot in October. Expect a lot more casting updates in the days and weeks ahead.

Carlton Cuse describes Bates Motel’s Norma as “very hot.” Well, they certainly cast the right actress for that.
