The last of an ancient order of Jewish mystics capable of extraplanar travel, The Merkabah Rider roams a demon haunted American West in search of his renegade teacher. But as the trail grows fresher, shadows gather, and The Hour Of The Incursion draws near… Four novella episodes in one book. This ain’t your grandpappy’s old west.
I used to love old western tales as a child, in fact the first novel I ever read was “Little House On The Prairie”, while I am not sure that would be considered a western, it did set the tone to my love for that era of American history and to enjoy westerns for years to come. That all fell by the wayside when I discovered horror.
With “Merkabah Rider” Mr. Erdelac combines the two genres in a way that anyone who loves either genre will enjoy these tales.
This is a group of four novellas in one book, all the tales are tied together as the Merkabah Rider searches for the teacher that betrayed him.
The extent of Mr. Erdelac’s research into this story is readily apparent. He thankfully provides a lexicon for all the Hebrew, Yiddish and Aramaic terms used in the stories, which I found to be a nice touch and very necessary as there are some terms that the average person would not know.
Each story stands alone as a separate tale but I found that to have them grouped in one book definitely made the whole story arc that much more enjoyable.
Ed did a wonderful job with all the characters, especially “The Rider”. He is one of the more fascinating characters I have read in a while and hopefully will be able to read more of his adventures in the future.
The atmosphere, places, monsters and characters Ed creates here will keep any horror fan riveted to the stories. The stories are fast paced, filled with action and frights, with enough bloodshed to appeal to a wide audience.
I really enjoyed this group of tales by Mr. Erdelac as I am sure you will too and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fresh storyline filled with memorable characters that takes place in the old west, though one that is a lot more frightening than the old west we are used to.
