Sideshow Collectibles has debuted their first figure from the Detective Comics 1/6th scale line: The Joker!
Feel free to skip ahead to the full specs and pictures, but allow me to delve a little into the importance of this new line and this figure. For the past few years companies like Hot Toys, Enterbay, and MedicomToy have given us no shortage of 1/6th scaled collectibles from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy-Hot Toys has even included the Keaton Batman and Nicholson Joker from Tim Burton’s ’89 Batman. Now, while such lines have been nothing short of amazing (some far more amazing than others), there has been a noticeable void in the 1/6th scale market of figures based off the Batman comics, or any DC comics for that matter. DC Direct made a 13” line of comic based super hero figures and villains that were atrocious, and Mattel has held the license to little praise over the years. Overall, however, nothing really has been released for the mature collector. Until now.
Sideshow Collectibles previewed the first five figures from this line at the 2012 San Diego Comic Con. I was impressed with the figures then, and I’m even more impressed with this Joker figure now. I’m more of a good guy collector, I have very few villains. Don’t ask me why. Maybe it’s the price and having to limit myself to my absolute favorite characters. However, when it comes to this new Joker I’m all in.
I’ve toyed with the idea of collecting the Nolan Batman figures by Hot Toys but with the rising prices it’s gotten harder and harder to fork over the money to complete the line. This figure, though not cheap at $189.00, is cheaper than the Hot Toys Heath Ledger Joker by almost $75-$100 dollars. Certainly the quality of the Hot Toys Joker will be a notch above SSC, but it is very evident that SSC has stepped up their game with this figure in the same vein they have with their G.I. Joe line. I’ll leave Star Wars out of this because, while SSC is great at sculpting likenesses based off comic and cartoon characters, their track record for actors oftentimes are hit or miss. Don’t get me wrong, the blame should not fall solely on the SSC sculptors, often times sloppy paint apps completely drown a great sculpt.
Check out the pictures and decide for yourself. If SSC can keep the quality control issues to an absolute minimum for this line, you can bet there will be a lot of happy comic fans around the globe.
