What is Famous Monsters?
Famous Monsters is the world’s longest-running genre entertainment brand. First established as a one-off magazine called Famous Monsters of Filmland in 1958, it eventually evolved into a regular publication, and the name has become synonymous with monster movie magic and practical makeup effects in both the black and white horror classics of yore and modern slasher flicks.
Thanks in no small part to longtime Editor-in-Chief Forry Ackerman — who used to make road trips around America to visit his young readers — an important focus of Famous Monsters has always been not only on successful filmmakers, but on the young and enthused, the next generation of creature creators who grew up mixing vats of fake blood in the kitchen and might one day be accepting an Academy Award.
Many people are familiar with Famous Monsters because of the magazine’s unique and striking cover art, with monsters painted over the years by legends like Basil Gogos and Sanjulian and modern masters like Bob Eggleton and Terry Wolfinger.
2018 marks Famous Monsters’ 60th anniversary, and in a world where brands come and go as quickly as social media posts, that is no small change. It is evidence of trust and loyalty in the Famous Monsters brand over three generations of “Monster Kids”, many of which include film industry leaders and luminaries who credit the magazine with their early development of passion projects.
Currently, the Famous Monsters brand consists of three publications per year (one annual and two volumes of “Ack-Ives”), a comic book publishing division, a web store based on the classic magazine’s back catalog, a YouTube channel featuring horror coverage and DIY tutorials, a pop culture podcast, and live events where fans can mingle, watch movies, and learn tricks of the makeup trade.
