Review by Caroline Stephenson.
I would be lying if I said Box of Dread’s SHAUN OF THE DEAD/ARMY OF DARKNESS mashup theme didn’t excite the hell out of me. I mean, come on, these are two pretty iconic and beloved flicks. Well, this month’s Box of Dread definitely did not disappoint in terms of cool collectibles and swag!
First item out of the box was Vinyl Sugar’s Shaun (SHAUN OF THE DEAD) DORBZ figure. It’s a really nice vinyl figure complete with details like Shaun’s nametag, his trusty cricket bat, and even the tiny red [blood] stain on his shirt. And bonus, the box wasn’t damaged!
Next, we have some STARSHIP TROOPERS trading cards. Talk about some “unlikely heroes”! Circa 1997, these bad boys features images from Paul Verhoeven’s action-packed Sci-Fi, as well as storyboard sketches and facts about the scenes. These cards are practically oozing nostalgia.
As always, the team at Box of Dread included some pretty sweet posters in this month’s box! The first one is a movie poster for the upcoming horror/comedy anthology HOLIDAYS. The flick will feature shorts from the likes of Kevin Smith (CLERKS, TUSK, RED STATE), Gary Shore (DRACULA UNTOLD), Adam Egypt Mortimer (SOME KIND OF HATE), and more. This poster arrived just in time, as the film releases in limited theaters today. So check your local listings to see if it’s playing near you!
Our second poster is a pretty sweet piece of art featuring Ash doing what he does best, kickin’ some serious undead butt with his chainsaw. One thing I would love to see from Box of Dread is some sort of literature with the artist’s name. I’d love to be able to give them a shoutout for their work.
Last, we got issue #1 of Dynamite’s ARMY OF DARKNESS: FURIOUS ROAD, written by Nancy A. Collins (SWAMP THING, JASON V LEATHERFACE) with art by Kewber Baal (Dynamite’s JENNIFER BLOOD). Definitely very excited to give it a read!
All in all, I am very impressed with this month’s box. Check out our previous unboxings on our Youtube Channel and head to www.boxofdread.com to learn how to subscribe.
