As we descend into the madness of Oscars weekend, there’s still a lot going on in Hollywood that isn’t about the Little Naked Gold Man. First and foremost, February is the seventh annual Women in Horror Month. So get cracking! You only have a few days left to celebrate the women you love most!
THE FINAL FINAL GIRLS
We’ve been celebrating our own favorites over at our Facebook page. Did you know? We’ve been running a Favorite Final Girl bracket and we’re down to the last vote. Comment on FB or tweet us @FMOF which you think is the best: Neve Campbell (SCREAM), Jamie Lee Curtis (HALLOWEEN), Sigourney Weaver (ALIEN), or Marilyn Burns (THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE). One lucky voter will even win a Silver Scream Fest poster. Totally seriously!
IRONING OUT THE WRINKLES
Golden Globe–nominated director Ava DuVernay (SELMA) has signed with Disney to helm the studio’s upcoming adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic young-adult fantasy A WRINKLE IN TIME. With FROZEN and WRECK-IT RALPH screenwriter Jennifer Lee penning the script, I’m hopeful the two will be able to recreate the magic from the novel. If they can hit the right alchemy, there are four more novels in L’Engle’s WRINKLE oeuvre to pull from!
THE GOOD GUYS ARE BACK!
Chucky the killer doll’s been keeping a fairly low profile since CURSE OF CHUCKY, his 2013 venture that went straight to video. But the original CHILD’S PLAY screenwriter (and director of SEED OF CHUCKY and the aforementioned CURSE), Don Mancini, sent out two tantalizing tweets regarding the next installment this week, one of which indicated that BRIDE OF CHUCKY star, Oscar-nominated Jennifer Tilly (Best Supporting Actress, BULLETS OVER BROADWAY, 1995), might be on board! Nothing concrete yet, but where there’s smoke, we’re hoping there’s fire!
LOST IN SPACE
Another Oscar nominee, Demián Bichir (Best Actor, A BETTER LIFE, 2012), currently onscreen in THE HATEFUL EIGHT, is blasting into the ether in RIDLEY SCOTT’s ALIEN: COVENANT, the follow-up to 2012’s PROMETHEUS. He joins fellow Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender, who plays David, the only character appearing to cross over from the previous film; INHERENT VICE’s Katherine Waterston; and THIS IS THE END’s Danny McBride.
THE POWER THAT BE
After hitting the jackpot playing Rizzo in Fox’s GREASE LIVE, Vanessa Hudgens has signed to play the lead in DC Comics’ sitcom POWERLESS. Variety reports that “POWERLESS is a workplace comedy set at one of the worst insurance companies in America — with the twist being that it also takes place in the universe of DC Comics. The show is about the reality of working life for a normal, powerless person in a world of superheroes and villains.” Hudgens has been focusing mostly on the big screen with ventures like MACHETE KILLS, SUCKER PUNCH, and JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND since her breakout as Gabriella in the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL series of TV films. Let’s hope her participation is a sign that the project is quality!
