Luca Guadagnino Teases New American Psycho Movie

When the infamous Patrick Bateman sharpened his ax in the 2000 film American Psycho, fans were introduced to a darkly satirical and blood-soaked cinematic masterpiece. Now, director Luca Guadagnino (Bones and All, Call Me by Your Name) has announced his plans to reinterpret the chilling Bret Easton Ellis novel. Speaking during a CinemaCon presentation, Guadagnino teased his vision for a fresh adaptation of American Psycho—one that already has horror enthusiasts buzzing.

a new take on patrick bateman

The original American Psycho film, directed by Mary Harron with an iconic performance by Christian Bale, set the bar high for adaptations of Ellis’ polarizing 1991 novel. But Guadagnino is quick to clarify that his project is not a remake of Harron’s work. Instead, this adaptation will offer a novel take on the source material—one that promises to explore new depths of Bateman’s twisted psyche.

“We are working hard to bring to the screen a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho. It’s a book that I deeply love and one that influenced me so much,” Guadagnino explained in a video segment for Lionsgate’s presentation. He went on to praise screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (The Report, Apple TV+’s Extrapolations), saying the script is “coming out very handsomely.”

Burns’ nuanced storytelling and Guadagnino’s reputation for stylish, provocative filmmaking make for an intriguing combination. Together, they’re poised to craft an adaptation that both honors Ellis’ razor-sharp satire and breathes new life into the timeless tale of yuppie consumerism and unchecked depravity.

casting speculation

Casting rumors are swirling as Guadagnino has confirmed he is in discussions with “very exciting performers.” While Christian Bale’s portrayal of Patrick Bateman is universally lauded, Guadagnino has the opportunity to reimagine the character through a new actor’s perspective. Will they go for a fresh face, or a familiar name daring to step into the blood-soaked shoes of Bateman?

Fans are already speculating online about who might be best suited for the role. A-list actors known for their dark and intense performances—like Robert Pattinson or Timothée Chalamet—are being floated as potential contenders. Whoever Guadagnino selects will undoubtedly have a daunting but thrilling task ahead.

American Psycho: a legacy of horror and satire

New American Psycho Movie

American Psycho has endured as both a controversial novel and a film that divided critics and viewers alike upon its release in 2000. While some found its ultraviolence and excessive materialism unsettling, others appreciated its biting critique of the 1980s capitalist culture. Regardless of opinion, Christian Bale’s chilling performance and the film’s unforgettable aesthetic left a lasting cultural mark.

This context sets the stage for Guadagnino’s rendition to build upon a rich legacy. With themes that remain highly relevant—wealth, privilege, and toxic masculinity—a new American Psycho could resonate with contemporary audiences while offering commentary on today’s culture of excess.

excitement at cinemacon

The announcement at CinemaCon received considerable attention, with fans and industry insiders eager to see how Guadagnino’s vision develops. Lionsgate is fully backing the project, further solidifying its potential as a major addition to the horror genre.

Sam Pressman of Pressman Films, whose father produced the original movie, is on board as an executive producer, ensuring a connection to the original adaptation. With Frenesy Films also involved in the project, this promises to be a high-caliber production.

why this matters for horror fans

Luca Guadagnino’s interest in the macabre is no secret. His 2018 remake of Suspiria divided audiences but showcased his ability to experiment with horror in ways that linger long after the credits rolled. Whether you loved or hated Suspiria, it’s impossible not to be intrigued by what the director might bring to American Psycho.

With his flair for blending brutal imagery and emotional nuance, Guadagnino can deepen the psychological horror of Patrick Bateman’s world while modernizing its cultural critique.

will this American Psycho ditch the axe?

New American Psycho Movie

One question fans are already asking is how this new adaptation will approach the violence. The original is remembered for its shockingly graphic scenes, from mirror flexing during murders to chainsaw chases. Guadagnino’s work often leans more toward tension and emotional resonance than gore. Could this iteration of American Psycho leave the blood-stained ax on the shelf in favor of a subtler portrayal of Bateman’s descent?

This creative gamble could make or break the film for fans. Balancing the satirical wit and stomach-turning horror of Ellis’ novel will be no easy feat, but Guadagnino’s history as both a provocateur and a critical darling gives him an edge.

the wait begins

While no release date or official cast announcements have surfaced yet, anticipation is already brewing. Horror fans and cinephiles alike will be watching closely as this project unfolds.

Lionsgate and Frenesy Films seem confident in their vision, and Guadagnino’s enthusiasm for the source material hints at a passionate reimagining. Whether you’re a longtime fan of American Psycho or just love seeing horror classics reinterpreted, this is one movie to keep on your radar.
