Actor Angus Scrimm passed away January 9 at the age of 89. A Kansas City native, Scrimm won a Grammy for writing liner notes but is best known as the Tall Man, a villainous undertaker, in the surreal PHANTASM series. Despite his imposing demeanor (and his intimidating height of 6’4”), Scrimm was well known as being warm and kind-hearted.

PHANTASM director Don Coscarelli Tweeted about his leading man: “Angus Scrimm passed away peacefully tonight surrounded by his friends and loved ones. He was 89 years old. His performance as the Tall Man is a towering achievement in horror film history. He was the last in a long line of classic horror movie stars. Angus was a terrific actor and an even better friend. He will be missed.”

A cult classic, PHANTASM influenced a generation of filmmakers, including JJ Abrams, who named Gwendoline Christie’s character in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Captain Phasma after the film. Abrams has also overseen a restoration of the original, which is set to be released this year.

Scrimm also had roles in CHOPPING MALL, JOHN DIES AT THE END, and WISHMASTER in addition to playing a recurring character on ALIAS. His last role is in the upcoming PHANTASM: RAVAGER.
